For the Love of a Dog – Celebrating Webster

Webster arrived in our lives at a point when our hearts were aching. We were still feeling pain, grieving over the loss of our dogs, Katie and Sophia. Tragically, we lost them during the summer and only two months apart, Sophia staying long enough to wish me a happy birthday and then departed with the same spirit and determination that governed her long and happy life.  I was ready to move on, to heal. The best way for me to do this was to bring another dog, a puppy, into our lives, our home. Bill on the other hand was not so ready to once again open up his heart. His grief had a life of its own and he would need to learn to embrace his grief before he could once again, embrace another small, shaggy life.

Almost three years later Bill, Webster and I are inseparable.  There are morning rituals, evening rituals and rituals in between. But there is no doubt that this fuzzy, little Ewok-looking dog, has helped us to heal and slowly, over time, helped us recover from the loss of lost love.

“He’s just a little dog,” we frequently laugh about (usually when he’s gotten into trouble). And for this little dog, every day is play day. He will probably never understand what he has given us, but then again, dogs seem to have an all-knowing wisdom of their own. Many times, they understand that we need our help to heal. And I believe that Webster, in his own way, has understood this too, and graciously accepted our offer of love and the very best life we can offer him in exchange for his love, his company and his amazing ability of help us heal.

Webster will turn three years old this week, on November 28th. And to celebrate his birthday this year, I’m declaring this “his” week on my blog.  I hope you love dogs and will enjoy the pictures and stories I’ll share with you this week.

There are two blog posts that I wrote about a year or so ago, that outlines the sequence of events as to how we found Webster (or maybe he found us) as well as our goodbyes to Katie and Sophia. I think you will enjoy both posts and they are provided below.

OMG! This dog is so cute. Happy birthday Webster!!!! Can’t wait to see his birthday photos. :-)

  2. Dickie Maxx Says:

Webster is adorable. I do have one question. What breed of dog is he? I looked at the breeders website and the breeds they sale now are not the same. Either way Happy Birthday Webster.

  3. Kat Says:

Hi Dickie! Drawing today, huh? Hope you had fun. Webster is a Lhasa Apso. We keep his hair short because it can grow quickly. Lhasa’s have hair, versus fur and it grows just like hair. I believe they are also hypo allergenic (so I think Obama should buy a Lhasa Apso)! :-)

Awwwwwwwww…Webster is the cutest doggie ALIVE!!!!! He should meet Jaru…not Lucy…just Jaru. Lucy has issues from the abuse she suffered and thinks all dogs smaller than her should be eaten.

Hey…they hurt her really, really bad. *sigh*

  5. Kat Says:

CreoleinDC: Ohhh, how sad for Lucy! I am amazed how mean people are to animals sometimes. They are so helpless and love unconditionally. I think anyone that hurts and animal is pond scum and should be castrated!

Thanks for your comments. And thanks again for the shout out for Glorias dog Champ!
